Nonprofit organizations are working hard to positively impact lives and communities. However, many lack the ability to obtain the skills, knowledge, tools, equipment, and other resources needed to do their jobs competently or to a greater capacity. Join us for this lightning round session to hear replicable examples from IPA members who are bringing local nonprofits to the next level of operational, programmatic, financial, or organizational maturity, so they may more effectively advance their mission into the future.
An extension of the “Introduction to Local Impact Investing” session, this workshop will help foundations and corporations understand the broad set of tools they can use to deploy impact capital, including PRIs/MRIs, loan guarantees, direct lending, integrated capital (loans and grants), and loan loss reserves. Learn how philanthropic investors are using these tools to address critical community issues and to identify specific gaps (e.g., needed infrastructure, cross-sector leadership, flexible investment capital, and effective policy).
As the social sector grapples with improving its record on diversity, equity, and inclusion, the question of what exactly the record shows about philanthropy’s reach into specific communities emerges. After all, how can we work toward a more equitable sector if we don’t have a starting point of data to use as a benchmark to track progress and inform our impact? What demographic data are available to answer this question, and how can funders and grantees alike more diligently track and share this information?
Skills-Based Volunteering (SBV) aligns a professional’s skills and talents to the social challenge they are best positioned to address. Also known as pro bono, SBV enables companies and foundations to support nonprofits where they need it most: the critical, yet often underfunded core mission functions of strategy, model development, technology, marketing, HR, and more. SBV is also a valuable tool for social impact organizations to establish and maintain mutually beneficial relationships with corporate partners.
Trust-Based Philanthropy is being embraced by a growing number of foundations and social investors as a way to alleviate power imbalances between funders and those they support while fostering more productive and informative relationships. Driven by the central philosophy that funders should approach grantee relationships as learning partnerships, a trust-based approach encourages multi-year unrestricted funding, streamlined reporting, and transparent and responsive communication.
There is a swelling movement in the philanthropic field to move from being donor-driven to being community impact-driven. In this session, attendees will review the major entry points to impact investing. Hear about local impact investing as an extension of broader community development and how it can help root wealth in communities. Explore stories of peers taking action to invest in their communities. Consider your organization’s “readiness” to move toward local investing for impact.
While many organizations have a CEO succession plan, it is much more important to have a succession plan for every aspect of the organization. Join your IPA colleagues to hear successful succession planning strategies that include organizational staffing, policies, and board succession plans.
As the future of work continues to evolve, more adults will face career transitions that demand the acquisition and demonstration of new skills, creating cycles of learning and earning throughout life. To enable these transitions and to better support workers, we need to create a new learning ecosystem.
All foundations can advocate by educating lawmakers on issues of importance to philanthropy, but there’s still uncertainty regarding the nuances and details that distinguish advocacy from lobbying. Hear from national partners as they share issues from the field in the ever-changing policy landscape. Learn how to support and strategize around initiatives that are most important to your community by exploring some of the tools of advocacy through the work of your peers.
Building the capacity of your grantees to engage in strong grant reporting and data practices is impossible without strengthening their overall organizational capacity. This workshop will help you identify specific grantmaking practices that will build your grantee’s capacity and fuel your own ability to learn from grant portfolios, share your learning internally and externally, and use these relationships to evolve your grantmaking strategy over time.
