This MasterClass introduces students and others interested in professional work of philanthropy and impacts on nonprofit missions. Themes for presentations and workshops include applied ethics for philanthropy, philanthropic community foundations and associations, advocacy for social justice and equity, and supporting and leveraging empathy in times of great need. MasterClass instructors are philanthropy researchers and practitioners representing many roles and missions in the nonprofit sector and interdisciplinary research on philanthropy.

  • The complex world of philanthropy: origins and diverse forms of nonprofit organizations
  • Varied motivations and methods for giving in current generations (Baby Boomers, Gen Xers, Millennials, Gens Y and Z), and the intergenerational transfer of wealth
  • Gen Z in the philanthropic sector: Innovative pathways for new voices
  • Effective Altruism: A philosophy of practice leveraging impactful giving
  • Exploring importance of embracing equity in the practice of philanthropy
  • Applied ethics for the nonprofit sector: Standards of practice and integrity for ethical dilemmas
  • Identifying needs and solutions through inclusive collaboration by emphasizing trust and reflecting the communities served through the practice of participatory philanthropy
  • Applying processes and practices of community improvement to nonprofits for facilitating community well-being
