In celebration of community pride, The Community Foundation of Pulaski County dedicated a tree in honor of all those who love where they live. The ceremony was held on Tuesday, June 17 to commemorate the planting of a beautiful Sunburst Locust tree, a cultivar of Indiana’s native Honey Locust (Gleditsia triacanthos). This meaningful event focused on the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to civic pride and community enhancement.

Special guest Wanda Zahrt, State President of The Garden Club of Indiana and member of the local Iris-Elm Garden Club, joined the occasion and offered a thoughtful speech reflecting on the symbolism of the Sunburst Locust. “This tree, with its vibrant golden foliage and graceful form, is a reminder of the light and resilience found in strong communities,” she remarked. She also shared a quote from the poem “Plant A Tree” by Lucy Larcom: He who plants a tree plants a hope.

The Sunburst Locust, known for its tolerance to urban conditions and striking seasonal color, was selected for its beauty, adaptability, and low maintenance—qualities that mirror the values of sustainability and longevity upheld by the Foundation. Leeann Wright, Executive Director of the Foundation, noted, “This tree stands as a living testament to the growth of not only the Foundation, but for the future of Pulaski County.”

“We’re honored to have such strong partnerships with local organizations and leaders,” said Kaye Beall, Board President of the Community Foundation. “Planting this tree is more than just a landscaping effort—it’s a symbol of our shared investment in the future of our community.”

The Community Foundation extends its sincere gratitude to the Indiana State Garden Club, Winamac Tree Committee, and the volunteers who made this dedication possible.
