Community Foundation of Elkhart County, Greater Elkhart Chamber of Commerce to form working group to study Tolson Center’s future
(Elkhart, Indiana) The Community Foundation of Elkhart County and the Greater Elkhart Chamber of Commerce are forming a group to look at how the Tolson Center could be utilized to benefit Elkhart families in the future.
Pete McCown, president of the Community Foundation, and Levon Johnson, Chamber president, will co-chair a community conversation focused on finding solutions for the center. Details will be forthcoming.
Tolson Center is set to close following a summer camp after a majority of the Elkhart City Council voted not to continue funding through the end of the year. The city of Elkhart has operated Tolson for 25 years, primarily as a youth center.
“We hope that by convening this group and hearing from the community, we learn what could be the next chapter for the Tolson Center,” said McCown.
Johnson added, “Tolson Center has been a contributor in the lives of many and we hope to bring community resources together so it can continue empowering and equipping young people and others.”
The working group will meet and begin brainstorming potential solutions in the coming weeks.
