Getting Focused on Community Impact: Using the Opportunity Filter Tool

Amy leads IPA’s Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow (GIFT) initiative funded by Lilly Endowment Inc. In this work, she oversees board and staff training, consulting, and networking opportunities that strengthen Indiana's 94 community foundations. Amy also serves as a navigator for IPA’s GIFT VII community leadership work.

Before joining IPA in 2020, Amy served for eight years as executive director of Blue River Community Foundation based in Shelbyville, Indiana. In this role, she built cross-sector partnerships for greater impact, transitioned the foundation to a catalytic model, improved operational efficiencies and nearly doubled the foundation’s assets.

Prior to her work at the community foundation, Amy had a successful career in community development. She was the redevelopment director for the City of Shelbyville and the executive director of Mainstreet Shelbyville. As redevelopment director, Haacker led collaborative plans for community and economic development efforts as a Stellar Communities program finalist. She also helped create a workforce development partnership with the City of Shelbyville and Rose Hulman Institute of Technology that provides local career pathways in engineering, science and technology.

Amy earned her master’s degree from Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment and bachelor’s degree from Purdue University’s School of Agriculture. She completed Ball State University’s Building Better Communities Indiana Economic Development course, has a Certificate in Fund Raising Management from IU Lilly School of Philanthropy and is a Certified Fund Raising Executive.

Matthew Lewis has worked in a variety of roles at the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan since 2016, most recently as Director of Governance and Operations. In that role Matt supports the president, organizes activities of the Foundation's Board, manages the Foundation's supporting organizations, and coordinates general foundation operations. Matt is a leader of the Community Foundation's strategic planning project team, which is working with the Board and staff leadership to create a 10-year strategic framework for the Foundation. In addition to his work with the Community Foundation, Matt is a member-owner of Book Suey, a cooperatively owned and operated bookstore in Hamtramck, Michigan. He lives in Detroit.

Tony is a Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy® and independent philanthropic advisor. He helps wealthy families, grantmakers, and their advisors and associations with issues of purpose, resources and vehicles for social impact, strategy, assessment, and governance and family dynamics. In four years as executive director of the Roy A. Hunt Foundation, he facilitated changes in visioning, impact investing, grantmaking, trustee education, and operations for a multi-generation family. In twelve years and four roles at the Central Indiana Community Foundation, he led grantmaking and community change initiatives, advised generous entrepreneurs and families on philanthropic tools and strategy, attracted $39 million in assets and co-investments, and co-founded a social enterprise.

Based in Pittsburgh, Tony is also a Senior Consultant with Ekstrom Alley Clontz & Associates, Senior Consultant with the National Center for Family Philanthropy, and Senior Advisor to the Impact Finance Center. He is a member of the Purposeful Planning Institute and National Network of Consultants to Grantmakers, and he’s volunteered for more committees, task forces, and boards than he can remember.
