State Representative Milo Smith (R-Columbus) has been named the 2013 Public Policy Champion of Philanthropy by the Indiana Grantmakers Alliance for his work in authoring a bill dealing with the donation of agricultural products. The bill was signed by Governor Pence and enacted into law in July.

“I am honored and humbled to receive this recognition through the Indiana Grantmakers Alliance,” said Rep. Smith. “I truly appreciate the work of Indiana Grantmakers Alliance and I look forward to continuing my efforts in philanthropy this coming session.

” Rep. Smith’s bill makes it easier for Hoosier farmers when making a charitable donation. Now, when gifts of grain, livestock, lumber and other agricultural and food products are given to a non profit organization, the donor and recipient, such as a community foundation, are protected from a liability if the product is discovered to be tainted in some way.

The award was presented to Rep. Smith Wednesday. The Indiana Grantmakers Alliance is a nonprofit association that serves the state’s community, corporate, family, independent, operating, private and public foundations in addition to corporate giving programs.
