CARES Act Allows for Reinstatement of Universal Charitable Deduction

Indiana Philanthropy Alliance launches resource to assist Hoosiers in making gifts to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and encourages Hoosiers to donate using new federal incentives.

Last night, the US Senate unanimously passed S 3548, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) bill, after reaching a deal with the House. The relief package includes the allowance of the universal charitable tax deduction up to $300 for every American in 2020. Both Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) expect the bill to pass the House of Representatives with bipartisan support and be signed by President Donald Trump tomorrow.

IPA President & CEO Claudia Cummings said, “This is a significant tool to combat the effects of the pandemic. Indiana’s congressional delegation was in regular communication with IPA and the philanthropic community during the legislative process and delivered an important win.”

Foundation members of Indiana Philanthropy Alliance across the state have stood up COVID-19 response funds to provide rapid support to nonprofit organizations on the front lines serving during this time of crisis.

“At a time when Hoosiers are locked in our homes and wanting to help our neighbors, donating to a local crisis response fund is exactly what we can do. These funds provide individuals and organizations the opportunity to pool financial resources to deploy them to the areas of greatest need in this quickly-changing situation,” Cummings continued.

To make giving easier, IPA has created a central listing of COVID-19 response funds across the state. Hoosiers can donate to any of the funds listed a www.INPhilanthropy.org/COVID19Funds.
