Wednesday, November 1, 2017

The Portland Foundation has received its second largest-ever gift, $2.451 million from the estate of Dorothy H. Hamma.

Dorothy Hamma, along with her husband Weldon, were owners of Hamma's Grocery. Dorothy passed away in August while Weldon passed away in 2015.

She bequeathed 90% of the residuary of her estate to the Foundation, creating three new endowments.

The 90% is to be divided as follows:

  • $1,103,000 to create the Weldon L. and Dorothy H. Hamma Endowment, an unrestricted endowment that will make grants to Jay County not-for-profit organizations
  • $1,103,000 to create the Weldon L. and Dorothy H. Hamma Memorial Scholoarship Fund, that will award scholarships to Jay County High School graduates
  • $245,000 to create the Weldon L. and Dorothy H. Hamma Asbury United Methodist Church Endowment, which will support capital improvements at the church

"We are honored that Dorothy and Weldon entrusted The Portland Foundation to fulfuill their philanthropic legacy for the community they so dearly loved," said Foundation Exectuvie Director Doug Inman. "Their gift will allow the Foundation to have an even bigger impact as we work to enhance the quality of life in Jay County." With the Hamma gift, The Portland Foundation's assets now total more than $36 million.
