11 Delaware Co. Nonprofits Receive $85K in Grant Funding from Community Foundation

Muncie, Ind. – The Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County, Inc. awarded $85,700 to 11 nonprofit organizations during the third Quarterly Competitive Grant cycle of 2017.

The Community Foundation's purpose is to improve the quality of life in Muncie and Delaware County for this generation and generations to come. Quarterly Competitive Grants are awarded to fund projects for which there is a demonstrable community benefit in one of the following areas of interest: arts and culture, human services, economic development, education and community betterment.

The Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County, Inc. is a publicly supported philanthropic institution governed by a volunteer board of local citizens. The Foundation manages contributions donated by individuals, businesses and corporations as a permanent community endowment.  Distributions from these funds are given back to the community in the form of grants to nonprofit organizations and agencies. To date, more than $44 million has been awarded to enrich the lives of the residents of Muncie and Delaware County.

Unless otherwise noted, the following grants were awarded from the Unrestricted Fund of The Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County, Inc.

Ball State University received $6,000 (from the Edmund F. and Virginia Ball Fund and Jane E. Hughes Fund) to defray the cost of expanding a pilot project that encourages middle and high school students to consider educational paths in Information Technology.

Bridges Community Services received $13,700 (from the Bassett Family Fund, MutualBank Charitable Foundation Fund, and Jeanne and John Smith Fund) to hire a part-time specialist to support the collaboration of homeless network providers and to replace appliances in temporary housing.

College Mentors for Kids, Inc. received $5,000 (from the Jane E. Hughes Fund, KAKATU Foundation/David and Joanna Meeks Fund, and Old National Bank Fund) to impact more than 200 Delaware County elementary students through a Ball State University mentoring program.

Delaware County Historical Society received $5,000 (from the Esther Ball Fund, Gordon and Pam Cox Fund, and Historical Preservation Fund) for facility improvements including a new sidewalk, lighting, and hand rail at the Moore-Youse Home Museum.

East Central Indiana Chamber Orchestra received $2,000 (from The Endowment for the Arts Fund, John and Janice Fisher Unrestricted Fund, and Mary Jane Sursa Fund) to defray the cost of the 2017-2018 concert season.

Muncie Innovation Connector received $3,000 to support entrepreneurial activities in Delaware County.

TRC Muncie Head Start received $20,000 (from the Stefan and Joan Anderson Unrestricted Fund, Waldo and Louisa Beebe Unrestricted Fund, Linda and Connie Gregory Fund, Jeff and Beth Lang Fund, Mary Kate Pingry Fund, MutualBank Charitable Foundation Fund, Martin D. and Helen B. Schwartz Unrestricted  Named Endowment Fund, Hamer and Phyllis Shafer Fund, Jeanne and John Smith Unrestricted Fund, Mary Jane Sursa Fund, and Gary and Amy Thomas Fund) to defray the cost of replacing the boilers at the Muncie Head Start Center.

WIPB-TV received $3,000 (from the Francis Lafferty Fund, Michael O. and Nicole T. Lundsford Fund, Mid-West Metal Products Fund, Shafer/Muncie Power Products Legacy Fund, Daniel and Catharine Stewart Fund, and Faye Wingate Fund) to grow the Be My Neighbor Day event focused on the importance of being a good neighbor and making a connection to PBS educational program for families and children.

Women in Business Unlimited received $3,000 to provide support for the Catalyst for Empowering Women Symposium and professional workshops.

Youth Symphony Orchestras of East Central Indiana received $4,000 (from the Jane Harrell Buckles Fund, LEAP Managed IT Fund, Charles and Claudia Sursa Unrestricted Named Endowment Fund, and Joseph and Janet Wilson Unrestricted Fund) for a project in partnership with Ball State University designed to give individualized music instruction by music education students.

YWCA of Muncie received $20,000 (partial funding from the Edmund F. and Virginia B. Ball Fund, Basset Family Fund, and Jim and Mary Rosema Fund) to defray the cost of operations of the emergency shelter program for homeless women and children in East Central Indiana.
