Welborn Baptist Foundation announces $1.5 million in Early Learning Grants

Monday, November 26, 2018

The Welborn Baptist Foundation has awarded approximately $1.5 million in grants to five community organizations participating in the Foundation’s 2018 Early Learning grant cycle: Evansville Christian School, Carver Community Organization, YMCA, St. Vincent’s Early Learning Center and Community Coordinated Child Care (4C) of Southern Indiana, Inc. (Distribution detail attached)

Grants awarded will support 2019 and 2020 initiatives. “These grants reflect focused investments in Early Learning”, said Patrick Jackson, Senior Program Officer. “They are designed to contribute to two important changes in our community: more children arriving at Kindergarten ready to learn, and more 3rd graders exceeding grade-level benchmarks for school success.”

Grants were awarded to align with the Foundation’s four priorities for Early Learning investment:

  • Family Engagement
  • Provider Effectiveness
  • Affordable, High-Quality Enrollment
  • Academic Supports

The Foundation also designated the YMCA of Southwestern Indiana’s Bridges to Literacy Pilot program as the Marjorie Z. Soyugenc Memorial Grant for 2018.  This award is a tribute to the late Marjorie Z. Soyugenc, who served as the Foundation’s first CEO until her retirement at the end of 2008. Mrs. Soyugenc passed away in 2012.
