In 2021, the Veteran Endowment Fund was established by the Community Foundation of DeKalb County to assist veterans and their families in NE Indiana. As the fund continues to mature, it has already begun supporting organizations with missions focused on helping veterans in DeKalb County. In 2023, the fund provided support to the following organizations:

  • INVets - $1,250
  • War Veterans Memorial Shrine of American History, Inc. - $1,250
  • American Legion Post 178 - $500
  • American Legion Post 202 - $500
  • American Legion Post 467 - $500
  • American Legion Post 97 - $500
  • Quiet Knight Veteran Assistance Food Pantry - $500

Veterans hold a special place in the heart of Kyra Garrett, the owner of the Route 6 Diner in Waterloo. Many of her customers are veterans, and they regularly gather at her restaurant for meals. This fall, one customer suggested raising money for the Veteran Endowment Fund. The initiative gained momentum, resulting in Kyra, her staff, and customers raising $700 for the Fund.

Tanya Young, Executive Director of the Foundation, expresses gratitude: “The generosity displayed by the Route 6 Diner and the community is a testament to the appreciation we collectively hold for the men and women who have served in the military. These funds will enable the Veteran Endowment Fund to continue supporting veterans in meaningful ways.”

Those interested in assisting veterans in NE Indiana are encouraged to contribute to this fund through the Community Foundation of DeKalb County. For questions, contact Tanya Young at (260) 925-0311 or director@cfdekalb.org.
