Purdue University’s Women’s Basketball Coach Presents at Annual Women’s Tea
The 19th Annual Women’s Tea took place on Wednesday, September 11, at the Porter County Expo Center. The tea supports the Women’s Fund of Porter County – a giving circle at the Porter County Community Foundation. With over 200 women in attendance at this year’s event, the guest speaker was Sharon Versyp, Head Coach of Purdue University’s Women’s Basketball team.
Sharon Versyp is a native of Mishawaka, IN. She was named Indiana Miss Basketball in 1984, was a 4-year starter at Purdue and a Second Team Academic All-American. After graduating from Purdue, she coached two Indiana high school teams before entering the collegiate ranks in 1996. Now starting her 14th season at Purdue and having amassed 276 victories, Versyp is the winningest coach in Boilermaker program history.
Versyp is known for her coaching style – helping to mold strong individuals and strong leaders on her team. At the end of the day, it is not about the number of wins or the stats, it is about developing players who will grow up and make a difference in their community. It is about doing things the right way – with integrity.
With a similar message to the ladies in the room, Coach Versyp spoke about the importance of paying it forward. She challenged the women in attendance to lend a helping hand, to make a difference, and to do something good for someone else.
“We can all do more,” Versyp said. “The work you’re doing here is amazing. You’re knocking down walls and hitting home runs—keep growing,” she encouraged.
