Member Spotlight: John Murphy, Ivy Tech Foundation

Friday, December 14, 2018

Get to know John Murphy, President of Ivy Tech Foundation.

What’s kept you there?

I have been invested in Ivy Tech for over 25 years as a board member, adjunct professor, donor and most recently working as the president of the Foundation.  I have stayed connected for so long because I truly believe in the mission and the impact we are able to have in the lives of our students and the communities we serve.

What’s the biggest impact your organization has made this year?

Providing scholarships to our students is not only a personal passion of mine, but also one of the amazing ways the Foundation is able to impact our students.  Last fiscal year we awarded nearly $4 million in scholarships to 4,031 students.

Who/What inspires you?

I am inspired every time I attend one of our graduation ceremonies and see hundreds of students walk across the stage and receive their associate’s degree diploma.  It puts in perspective the work we do at the Foundation to help students achieve their degrees.  I know that degree or certificate truly betters their lives, families and communities.

What can you imagine in 5 years if your organization is successful?

Last year we raised over $43.5 million dollars, and in five years I can only imagine and hope we will nearly double that on an annual basis.  The results will provide the means to increase the people we service and make available the education and resources needed to help our students, faculty and programs across the state.  I would hope by 2023 every person in Indiana will know about Ivy Tech and have heard the amazing success and impact stories of our students and alumni.

Where are you on the introvert/extrovert scale?

I am an extrovert and do not know a stranger, nor am I afraid to tell the amazing story of Ivy Tech to anyone I meet.

What’s happening at your organization?

One of our newest programs I am very proud of is our Women in Philanthropy program called Circle of Ivy.  It is a membership-based women’s giving program that raises money to help diminish barriers to higher education for our Ivy Tech students.  In less than four years, we have been able to collectively raise over $300,000 and have grown our membership to over 600 members!  If you are reading this, you will just have to check out our program at ivytech.edu/circleofivy.
