Community Foundation of Elkhart County to Award Grants from New Fund
The Community Foundation of Elkhart County is accepting applications for grants from the new Mishler Brown Fund.
The fund is one of several hundred at the Community Foundation and will honor the life and legacy of Helen Mishler, a Nappanee woman who died in 2020 at the age of 94 and left a significant gift to the Community Foundation.
Mishler loved farming and preserving its heritage. In her estate, she made plans to preserve one of the oldest farms in Elkhart County. A cabin constructed in 1838 on five acres of land near Nappanee is still standing and Mishler assured that it will be preserved where it sits near a large ginkgo tree.
In addition to preserving her family’s homestead, she also established the Mishler Brown Fund as part of her legacy. The fund will honor her life by granting to nonprofits that work in agriculture and preservation.
Through Dec. 31, 2022, the Community Foundation is accepting grant applications from 501(c)(3) organizations or programs whose mission supports the interests of farming; agriculture; historic preservation of farms, barns and equipment; or preservation of natural resources.
Chris Gillam, a friend who became executor of Mishler’s estate, will work with the Community Foundation staff to make awards. Grants will be given in early 2023 after review of applications submitted before the December 31 deadline.
Carrie Berghoff, Chief Development Officer, said, “The Community Foundation is honored to receive legacy gifts such as this one and works with donors to support causes about which they are passionate. Helen was such a sweet woman and we will take great care as stewards of her gift.”
