Community Foundation Basics is a condensed, five-hour version of IPA’s popular Boot Camp. It is perfect for new staff, board members, or anyone seeking a foundational understanding of how community foundations operate.

Led by experienced staff from the GIFT team at Indiana Philanthropy Alliance, this training equips you with essential knowledge to guide your day-to-day decision-making and strengthen your role in the foundation’s success. The program can be customized to include Snapshot Report data for your foundation or region, adding context for your newest leaders.

Program duration: 5 hours (typically 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM, with a break for lunch) 

Location: GIFT will travel to your community foundation or region for this in-person training. You will be responsible for coordinating logistics such as location, refreshments, and registration. IPA’s GIFT team will provide training materials.

  • How community foundations fit within the broader nonprofit sector
  • The role of board members and what makes an effective board
  • Common types of funds, how they work, and their unique restrictions
  • Grantmaking best practices and legal considerations
  • How foundations lead beyond the check through community leadership
  • Ways to grow resources by analyzing donor data and trends
  • Finance, investments, and effective stewardship of charitable assets
  • How to integrate all aspects of your foundation’s work for long-term impact
