Skills-Based Volunteering 101: How to Leverage Corporate Talent to Build Capacity

Skills-Based Volunteering (SBV) aligns a professional’s skills and talents to the social challenge they are best positioned to address. Also known as pro bono, SBV enables companies and foundations to support nonprofits where they need it most: the critical, yet often underfunded core mission functions of strategy, model development, technology, marketing, HR, and more. SBV is also a valuable tool for social impact organizations to establish and maintain mutually beneficial relationships with corporate partners. In this session, Common Impact, a national leader in SBV, will guide participants through the fundamentals of pro bono and explain how foundations and corporations can integrate it into their philanthropic strategies to support community partners.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand how to help nonprofit partners leverage talent to scale their services and better serve their constituents.
  • Become familiar with core SBV models, including day of service projects, medium and long-term consulting projects, virtual projects, board service, and more.
  • Learn how to design and execute successful SBV projects that produce lasting capacity-building outcomes for nonprofit partners.
