DIRECTOR OF FINANCE

Job type:              Full-time, salaried, exempt, eligible for benefits   

Salary:                 $55,000 - $65,000 annually

Primary Purpose:     The Director of Finance’s primary purpose is to maintain the financial integrity of the Foundation by ensuring the accurate and timely implementation and accounting of the Foundation’s finances and investments according to the policies and procedures developed by the Board of Directors; by ensuring the accurate and up-to-date maintenance of all Foundation financial records; and to provide assistance to the President/CEO as required.

Major Accountabilities:

  • Serves as primary Foundation contact for all financially related inquiries from fund holders, donors, grantees, outside audit firms, vendors, investment managers, trust officers and board members.
  • Audit - Serves as liaison with the Foundation’s auditor by preparing all required financial records and letters for the audit and 990.
  • Budget - Works with the President/CEO and other staff to project and prepare the annual operating budget for recommendation to the Finance Committee and the Board of Directors.
  • Accounting Policies and Procedures - Implements the fiscal polices and procedures as developed by the Board of Directors and advises the President/CEO of needed changes in such policies. 
  • Payroll administration - Serves as liaison to the Foundation's professional employer organization for timely and accurate processing of payroll and associated functions.
  • Board Attendance - Attends all meetings of the Board of Directors and Finance Committee.
  • Investments - Monitors investment performance, manages the short-term investment portfolio,  recommends fund adjustments and cash management strategies; facilitates instructions to investment advisor as directed by the President/CEO and the Finance Committee.  
  • Financial Reporting – Prepares all necessary and requested financial reports for the Board of Directors, Finance Committee, Regional Foundations, Special Projects and all other specific requests.
  • Office Administration – Ensures that all business functions necessary to keep the Foundation running effectively on a day-to-day basis are handled.
  • Donor Retained Advisors – Ensures that all funds held by outside advisors are invested and administered according to the guidelines established by the Foundation’s Board of Directors.
  • Fund Management – Ensures that all funds held by the Foundation are accounted for in the proper manner by accurately posting revenues and expenses on a monthly basis; preparing the “spendable amount” on an annual basis as applicable; processing fund statements; processing all changes to the fund; maintaining the funds status in C-Suite and reporting all fund information as needed.
  • General Accounting and Bookkeeping – Ensures that the Foundation is properly recording all transactions by preparing monthly bank reconciliations for the Foundation’s bank accounts; calculating transfers between the Foundation’s cash and investment accounts; issuing administrative and grant checks; maintaining the Foundation’s balance sheet and properly recording revenue and expense.

Qualifications:

  • Required education: Undergraduate degree in finance, accounting, or business administration. Graduate degree or CPA designation preferred but not required.
  • Three years or more in a role of progressive responsibility, specifically in the finance arena within a nonprofit agency. Five or more years preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge of GAAP and FASB standards as they apply to nonprofit agencies.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Exhibits sound judgment with the highest ethical standards.
  • Capable of managing all aspects of finance and administration and maintaining effective relationships with financial institutions.
  • Proven knowledge of accounting and financial systems.
  • Excellent project management skills.
  • Computer skills, experienced with Microsoft Office Suite as well as the ability to comprehend the Foundation’s software package (C-Suite) and various financial management products.
  • Experience in working with boards and committees in nonprofit organizations preferred but not required.
