Effective Board Service: How to Identify and Train Executives

An extension of today’s Skills-Based Volunteering 101, this hands-on session will focus on how to successfully train executives for nonprofit board service.

Common Impact will share insights and best practices from its two decades of experience in skilled volunteerism, including board matching and service. Participants will learn how to identify suitable candidates, introduce them to the fundamentals of board governance, and equip them to make a positive impact through their service.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand best-practices for defining, growing, and evolving a nonprofit board, including setting board member expectations, responsibilities, and engagement norms.
  • Learn an approach to identifying and vetting board members that align with nonprofit needs.
  • Set up incoming board members for success with best practices on serving on a governing and operating board, including understanding the core differences between the nonprofit and corporate landscape, working with and evaluating nonprofit leadership, driving effective give or get programs, and achieving mission outcomes.
  • Identify board service opportunities; evaluate if a potential board member is a good fit; and prepare the new board member, existing members, and nonprofit leadership for the onboarding process.
